He looks absent-mindedly at a neighbor walking to her car in the dawn&#8217;s blue light. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We cut to a flashing cursor on a blank page. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Somewhere, a child cries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sound of keys clacking, as words emerge behind the flickering cursor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It is no measure of a man how well-adjusted he may appear to be in a world as insane as ours. I&#8230; &#8220;<br><br>The cursor backs up slowly deleting &#8220;I&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We go about our lives, our affairs, our work and relationships, striving to be more awake, more conscious, more intentional, yet no matter how enlightened we may evolve&#8230; we may&#8230; dammit.&#8221;<br><br>Duncan pauses, pulls himself up out of his faux leather-clad Ikea recliner, tossing the laptop onto the seat, and goes to the kitchen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DUNCAN: You&#8217;d think an editor would be better at writing. (beat) What we got here&#8230; This sweet and sour chicken looks way past it&#8217;s prime&#8230; Oy! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He grabs an energy drink, snaps the tab, and guzzles the ungoldy purple fizzy conconction in lieu of actual sustenance. <br><br>Cut to the text editor, we hear Duncan grunt as he falls back into his chair. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;&#8230; no matter how enlightened we may become, there is forever an unconscious script we play out. Conditioned over a lifetime, by our peers, by the media, our&#8211;&#8220;<br><br>We hear the rising swell of distorted guitar chords, sweeping out the chords to the Beatles&#8217; Hey Jude. Duncan sighs and reaches over to grab his phone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DUNCAN: Good morning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DUNCAN: No, haven&#8217;t finished it, but&#8211; Right&#8230; Sure. Uhuh. (&#8230;) So, I will be uploading the revision by 7. It&#8217;s solid, just need another pass. The tone Squire has is &#8230; right. Will do. Out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Duncan tosses the phone to the couch, falls back into the lounger, looks to the ceiling and exhales loudly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DUNCAN: Another day, another dollar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He looks out the window, and we cut to a view that slowly zooms through the window out over the park and neighboring hotel. We could use some caffeine ourselves, as this movie has an unnecessarily long runtime and we finished our Mountain Dew and popcorn by the second act, if this fucking thing even has discernible acts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we watch a crowd gathered in protest in the park, some yelling, some running in various directions, and pan up to see a flock of birds shifting direction and dark grey clouds above, we hear Duncan: <br><br>DUNCAN: Maybe I should go see a movie.
